How Sleep Cycle Calculations Work
Sleep calculations are based on the natural rhythm of human brain waves. During sleep, your brain cycles through three primary stages: Light Sleep (NREM 1 & 2), Deep Sleep (Slow-Wave Sleep or NREM 3), and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) dream sleep. The Hazard of Sleep Inertia
If your alarm goes off while you are in the middle of a Deep Sleep phase, you will experience a state called sleep inertia—characterized by disorientation, heavy eyes, and mental fog that can take hours to clear. Conversely, waking up at the very end of a 90-minute cycle (when you naturally drift back into a light, near-conscious stage of sleep) allows you to open your eyes feeling refreshed, rested, and ready for the day, even if you got slightly fewer total hours.
Accounting for Sleep Latency
Most people do not fall asleep the instant their head touches the pillow. The average time it takes to transition from full wakefulness to light sleep is known as sleep latency, which clinical research places at approximately 14 minutes for healthy adults.
