Converting pedometer steps into calories burned involves exercise biology and physics. The calorie calculation depends on three main variables: your body weight, the distance covered, and your speed/pace (metabolic intensity).
The Role of Metabolic Equivalents (METs)
In physical science, energy expenditure is measured in METs (Metabolic Equivalent of Task). One MET is defined as the energy expended at rest (approximately 1 kcal/kg/hour). When you walk or run, your MET score increases dramatically. Walking at a slow, leisurely pace burns about 2.0 METs, whereas brisk walking utilizes 3.8 METs, and running at a fast pace can burn upwards of 12 METs. Determining Stride Length and Distance
Your stride length is the physical distance between consecutive placements of the same foot. It is closely related to your height and biological sex. For average adults, stride length can be estimated as 41.3% of height for women and 41.5% of height for men. Multiplying your step count by this estimated stride length yields the exact distance walked or run, which when divided by speed, provides the active duration of your workout.
How Weight Influences Energy Burned
Calorie burning is a function of mechanical work: moving a mass over a distance. A heavier individual requires more muscular work and burns more oxygen to transport their body mass over the same distance than a lighter individual. This is why personalizing your weight is the most critical step to achieving accurate calorie estimations.
